Remote Online Notarization
Remote online notarization is a notarial act on an approved audio-video platform with identity proofing and a recording. It is valid only if the notary's commissioning state allows it and the person who will rely on the document will accept that state's electronic certificate. Texas, Florida, Nevada, and New York have operating programs with extra registration. California-commissioned notaries cannot perform RON as of 2026.

The receiving party decides, not the platform
A lawful RON session still fails if the lender, recorder, school, or counsel will not take that state's electronic certificate. Ask them first. Wet ink remains the default for a lot of real-estate recording and for any California-commissioned notarial act until California RON is actually switched on.
State-by-state rules

Texas
Texas RON has been operational since 2018 (Gov't Code §§ 406.101-406.111). The notary must hold an online commission and be in Texas. Cap is $25 per online act. The receiving party still has to accept it.
Florida
Florida RON needs a Florida notary with separate online registration. Sessions are recorded. Cap is $25 (Fla. Stat. § 117.275). Witness-heavy documents such as durable POA still need those witnesses on the session.
Nevada
Nevada electronic and remote notarization requires SOS registration and an approved platform. Clark County recording and many title companies still want wet ink. Confirm the receiving party before you book.
California
California-commissioned notaries cannot perform RON until the SOS finishes implementing SB 696 (Gov. Code § 8231.2, backstop January 1, 2030). For a California notarization, book in person. Out-of-state RON is a different state's certificate.
New York
New York electronic notarization is operational. The notary must be physically in New York. Records are kept at least 10 years. Electronic acts are capped at $25. Co-op boards and many lenders still want wet ink.
