Florida car title notarization
A Florida notary does not issue a title. The county tax collector or FLHSMV does. Standard private-party auto transfers often do not require notarization of the seller's assignment. People still book a notary for Form HSMV 82994 (power of attorney for a motor vehicle, mobile home, or vessel), some bills of sale, out-of-state title issues, and RV or vessel packets. Read the title in your hand.
How the appointment works
- Check the current title and the tax collector's checklist. Do not assume every Florida car sale needs a notary.
- If the packet includes HSMV 82994 or another form with a notary block, gather the original title, photo ID, and any lien release.
- Do not pre-sign. Do not use white-out on the assignment. Do not bring a photocopy of the title.
- Each required signer appears with ID. Take the notarized packet to the tax collector yourself.
When Florida actually wants a notary
Form HSMV 82994 (Power of Attorney for a Motor Vehicle, Mobile Home, Vessel, or Vessel With Trailer) is a common notary booking. VIN verification on some out-of-state or altered titles uses other HSMV forms. Recreational vehicles, trailers, and vessels generate more notary work than a routine sedan sale between neighbors.
If the title assignment has no notary block and the tax collector's checklist does not call for one, you may not need this appointment. Ask the window, not a Facebook group.
Common Florida mistakes
Signing the title before the appointment. White-out on the assignment. Missing printed names. Using a photocopy of the title. A notary who notices a blank required field should stop rather than notarize a defective assignment.
After the appointment
File with the county tax collector or FLHSMV. Florida RON on a title assignment is only useful if that office will take a Florida online certificate on the original title. Many still want wet ink. Snowbird and tourist sales in Miami and Orlando fail when someone flies home with an incomplete odometer or lien section.
